SBAWI receiving national branding award in 2008!
Executive director, Lori Swendrowski, will be receiving the award at the
2008 national Spina Bifida conference in Tuscon, Arizona in June.
SBAWI receives two national awards in 2007! First place awards were received at the
SBA National Conference for the Chapter Newsletter award and Community

Two years after they
were separated, Sheboygan's formerly conjoined twins are
doing better than most expected. WISN 12 News' Toya

Healthy men who report lower levels of the nutrient folate in their
diets have higher rates of chromosomal abnormalities in their sperm,
according to a new study by researchers at the University of California,
Berkeley, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

2-14-08 - Ellen from 93.3FM visited the
SBAWI office and dropped off lunch items as part of the Panera Lunch
Break. It was a pleasure meeting Ellen. There was so much food that
SBAWI was able to share it with other office people in the building.

U.S. Paralympian
and University of Wisconsin Whitewater student Matt Scott will be
featured in a Nike commercial which is set to air on New Year’s Eve
and New Year’s Day. The spot is themed “No Excuses,” and is designed
to encourage people to get off the couch and get healthy.
The commercial
will begin playing at 11:30 p.m. E.T. on ESPN and MTV on Dec. 31st
and will continuously air throughout the early morning. On New
Year’s Day, the commercial will air continuously on Fox, ESPN, ESPN2
and on MTV, beginning with the Cottonbowl at 8:30 a.m. E.T. on Fox,
the NFL Network, BET, The Comedy Channel, FUSE, ABC Family and
others.
"Overcoming a disability and striving for athletic excellence is
certainly not for the weak," Scott said. "I am proud I was chosen to
represent disabled athletes and show that we do not make excuses."
8-3-07 - Sarah Mueller, 2007 Honorary Chairperson, and Lori Swendrowski,
Executive Director, were interviewed on the Morning Blend television
show to raise awareness about Spina Bifida and to promote the 14th
Annual Sprint for Spina Bifida.
4-11-07 ¾ When
staff from the Spina Bifida Association of Wisconsin, Inc. learned that
CocoaVia™, a new heart healthy chocolate bar from Mars, Inc., has 15% of
the daily value of folic acid, a discussion began on ideas on how to use
this information. A donation of ten thousand chocolate bars soon
followed.

abnormalities.

The
Spina Bifida Association of Wisconsin, Inc.’s Teens and Mentors (TEAM)
Program participants are conducting a school and medical supply drive to
help families in Guatemala affected by Spina Bifida and other
disabilities. The supplies will be distributed to needy families through
the Transitions Foundation of Guatemala, an organization that mobilizes
Guatemalans with disabilities to lead healthy and productive lives.

The Spina Bifida Association
(SBA), the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. and
GRUMA S.A. de C.V, announced today during NCLR's 2006 Annual Conference
their joint effort to help fight Spina Bifida. Through this joint
effort, GRUMA, one of the world's largest producers of corn flour and
tortillas, has begun researching and conducting product testing with the
goal of enriching its corn products with folic acid in the U.S. by the
end of 2006. This initiative has the potential to reduce the incidence
of Spina Bifida among all babies by 70 percent by helping increase the
intake of this nutrient among women.
07-07-06 ¾ The 13th Annual Sprint for
Spina Bifida, a 5k run/wheelchair race and 2 mile walk, will be held on
Aug. 12, 2006 at Mount Mary College beginning at 9 a.m. The event will
benefit the Spina Bifida Association of Wisconsin’s programs for
children and adults with Spina Bifida, outreach services, summer camp
funding and educational conferences.
04-04-06 ¾ The results of a study on bladders
grown from the patient's own tissue and successfully implanted in seven
children and teens with Spina Bifida were published in the British
journal, The Lancet. SBAWI reminds readers that the results of
this study are preliminary and there is still much research ahead before
this this type of tissue engineering becomes a common treatment.
